Peasley Cross URC recently celebrated 50 years of its building on the current site. The service was attended by the Lord Mayor of St Helens, Jeanette Banks, the Synod Moderator, Revd Geoff Felton, representatives of local churches and friends. They were welcomed by Helen Greener, the Church Secretary, and prayers were said by Margaret Worrall, to express joy and thanks to God.

Revd Allison Claxton, who led the service, preached on Joshua and called on the church to renew its commitment to serving God in a changing world. Revd Claxton used the example of Joshua as she explained that this building is an inheritance to be shared and that we should think about putting away ‘old gods’ and doing what Joshua said, ‘as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord’.

The previous building, the ‘old church’, was demolished in 1973 and the current building replaced it on the original site in 1974.

Although the new church building was only destined to last approximately 25years, it’s still going strong 50 years later, due in part to the skills and labour of church members who have kept it decorated and repaired when needed

Revd Allison Claxton said: “As well as readings by Barbara Bingley, we also had a whistle-stop tour of the history of Peasley Cross URC thanks to Paul Fairhurst. He shared a little of our journey from Congregational Church to URC and helped us understand where we came from as a congregation.

“As part of the service, we filled our time capsule with letters, photographs, cards and other items from the various groups which use the building. This included a cloth sheet of handprints in paint from our Messy Church families and leaders, and our guests and visitors were invited to place something in the box for future generations.

“The service was followed by a wonderful buffet provided by the church, and everyone was invited to sit, chat, eat and reminisce about their memories of Peasley Cross.

“It was a wonderful time, full of laughter, song and praise to the God who has kept us this ‘Church on the Corner’ for so many years. Here’s to the next 50!”
