Mod’s Plod Log Day 1: Follow Revd Geoff Felton on his Holy Week Prayer Walk across Mersey Synod
Mod’s Plod Log.
Day 1. Southport.
Psalm 100 - Know that the Lord is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his,
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture
The day began with drizzle and a chilling wind as the intrepid pilgrims set off from Churchtown Village URC and headed across Southport to Lord Street West a URC/Methodist LEP.
On our way we stopped to pray for Leyland Methodist Church, the now closed St Georges URC and the town of Southport as it puts behind it the cold, grey winter days and looks ahead to the busy summer season.
At Lord Street West, after a cup of coffee, we picked up some more pilgrims and headed off towards Birkdale where we were met with more refreshments and smiling faces.
Running about half an hour late we headed off to Ainsdale and the United Baptist URC Church. The award winning Church gardens were a sight to behold and a real oasis on the busy high street. At this point some people left the group and others joined as we prepared for the longest stretch of the walk.
The walk to Formby was redirected on the advice of the locals who suggested although Google had given the Moderator the quickest route to Formby it might not be such a good idea to walk along the bypass. Instead we headed along the picturesque forest route, home to the red squirrels and enjoyed being out in creation.
Upon reaching Formby URC after 10.5 miles, the pilgrims were reminded of the words of Psalm 100 v4 that says ‘Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise’. We rejoiced that we’d made it and we look forward to our walk on Tuesday when we shall be prayer walking Liverpool and covering about 14miles.
En-route we had great conversations that covered amongst other things deep theology, personal convictions, family life and our hopes for the future. We prayed together and gave thanks to God for a wonderful time of fellowship.
