Talking Faith with Children in the Community: Newtown URC’s Experience Pentecost with Queen’s Park C.E/U.R.C Primary School

Newtown URC recently welcomed Year 4 pupils from Queen’s Park C.E/U.R.C Primary School for its Experience Pentecost event. Church members from Newtown URC and Ormskirk Street, along with Mersey Synod staff, hosted six sessions with interactive activities and storytelling.

Revd Diane Barrow, Minister at Toll Bar with Prescot United Reformed Church and Newtown URC, said: “This is always a really encouraging event and a way of talking faith and sharing the story of Jesus and God’s love with children. The school pupils respond so positively and have great fun. They also write prayers, which are a lovely keepsake from the event. Our church members put in a big effort setting up the stations and then we have brilliant support from Ormskirk Street URC and the Synod staff on the day.”

The six areas covered:

Doing, Growing, Receiving, Sharing, Telling and Waiting.

Neil Houltram, a teacher at Queen’s Park C.E/U.R.C Primary School commented: “This URC event links in well to our Pentecost unit, so it’s brilliant for bringing learning into action. It’s great for the students to be out of the classroom and in a church environment and it’s an accessible and inclusive, so that they all have a way of understanding and enjoying the sessions.”

Year 4 pupils commented on the event:

Joseph – it was nice to talk about sharing and to share with each other

Luke – we talked about our accomplishments outside of school and how Pentecost fits into your life

Rhys - I learned how church is like a body of people

Georgia – I talked about the different languages I know and how this fits into church

Queen’s Park C.E/U.R.C Primary School is the only Church of England and United Reformed Church. The school and Newtown URC work together on regular projects. This includes supporting the ACE charity in Tanzania Africa's Children in Education (acecharity.org) . This has involved building a primary school and education sponsorships.

Newtown URC also team up with Ormskirk Street URC and St Luke’s to host an education service every October, which Queen’s Park C.E/U.R.C Primary School pupils, teachers and parents attend.
