Mission grant supports sensory space at Thomas Risley Church
A group offering a welcoming space, support and outreach to the local community at Thomas Risley Church (TRC) has increased this mission work through a URC Mersey mission grant to develop a sensory space. This will allow them the equipment to run more activities and provide additional support for community members bringing more mission opportunities to demonstrate God's love and care.
This will include sensory blankets and mats, sensory toys, bean bags, textured blankets and other equipment to create a comfortable and safe space for multiple needs. It will allow the group to meet more needs of community users and enhance support and care.
Tommy’s Tots is a thriving parent/carer and toddler group meeting Wednesday mornings at TRC in term time.
TRC Elder Pam Evans explains: “The sessions are consistently full and give us at TRC a great mission opportunity to demonstrate God’s love and care to our community. To enhance the care and support we are offering, we identified a need for a ‘sensory space’ and equipment to be made available to our toddlers and their carers.
“The majority of our parents/carers are not church attenders, although we are beginning to see some of them attending other church activities and church services – particularly our developing All Age Worship services. We are gently introducing Christian content to our sessions with songs, prayers, stories and crafts.
“We also aim to provide Christian welcome, care, support and a listening ear to those in need, using opportunities to share our faith when we can. Tommy’s Tots is well supported by a group of TRC volunteer staff who enable us to be available to interact with children and their parents/carers, particularly supporting those who might be new, need integration into the group or who just need care and a chat.”
