Holy Week Across URC Mersey Synod: Hopes and Dreams at Ormskirk Street’s Easter Experience

Ormskirk Street recently hosted two Year 2 classes from Queen's Park CE/URC Primary School, as they learned about Easter and the events of Holy Week.

Ian Thomas, a Church Elder in charge of Experiencing Easter at Ormskirk Street talks us through the event and its importance to the church and school community.

“This is something we have done for the last dozen or so years, but not always with the same age group of children.

“After a short welcome and introduction, the children are divided into five groups, and then they visit five stations placed around the sanctuary.

“Beginning with Palm Sunday, and its related title of Hopes and Dreams, the children think about the meaning behind the events on that day and suggest their own hope for the future. Moving to the Servant King - they learn about Christ washing the disciples feet and what it means to care for others.

“Remember Me tells the story of the last supper while at Alone they learn about how Jesus coped in the garden of Gethsemane.

“The children end with the cross - looking at different kinds of crosses and their relevance today, decorating their own small wooden cross.

“Finally, the children gather together for the final part of the story - the Resurrection and learn about the wonders of the empty tomb.

“The children all leave church with a goody bag which contains a palm cross, some Easter themed colouring pages, a short story about Easter and information about the Easter services at our church. The stations are 'manned' by volunteers from the church and from Newtown URC. “
